Supporting TFFPN in Developing a Data-Driven and Inclusive Forestry Industry with a Diversity Action Plan
At Folket Consultancy, we work in collaboration with clients to help solve their challenges and tailor our team based on the skills they need to meet their unique needs. In this case study, we share insights on how Folket supported The Tasmanian Forests and Forest Products Network (TFFPN) and their Diversity Action Plan. You’ll learn about the focus on capacity building of the TFFPN team and how we helped develop survey tools for data collection to help commence their work in creating an inclusive forestry industry.
About the Tasmanian Forests and Forest Products Network (TFFPN) and the Diversity Action Plan
The Tasmanian Forests and Forest Products Network (TFFPN) is a member organisation made up of industry and community members. The organisation is dedicated to fostering a sustainable and profitable forest industry in Tasmania. To achieve their future aspirations, TFFPN initiated the development of a Diversity Action Plan to attract and retain diverse talent within the sector. The initiative aimed to address current diversity challenges and identify opportunities to create a more inclusive forestry industry. TFFPN engaged Folket Consultancy to assist in the initial stages of forming the Diversity Action Plan.
Mapping the TFFPN’s Key Objectives to Tailor Our Team
At Folket Consultancy, we value collaboration and start each project with an explorative session to understand the client's needs, objectives, and goals. We then tailor our processes and methods to ensure we achieve the best possible outcomes, with the right team.
In collaboration with TFFPN, we identified the following three objectives:
Collect baseline data on the current state of diversity within the forestry workforce.
Understand perceived barriers and opportunities related to diversity.
Survey employers and employees to gather their experiences and perspectives on diversity.
On this project, Folket consultants Dr Meghan Bond and Linda Karlsson made up the team of folks. Meghan provided advice on research, analysis and data collection whilst Linda provided expertise on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) best practices as well as strategic communication and stakeholder engagement.
Tailored Approach for Diversity Data Collection and Analysis
Folket Consultancy then proposed a tailored approach to support TFFPN in achieving their objectives. Each step was developed in collaboration with TFFPN and their team:
Data Collection Tools: Development of a baseline data template and semi-structured interview script through an in-person workshop with TFFPN.
Data Collection and Analysis: Conducting telephone and semi-structured interviews, followed by data compilation and analysis with support from Folket Consultancy.
Folket Consultancy’s Collaborative Process for Effective Capacity Building
Collaboration and capacity building were central to this project. Folket Consultancy facilitated TFFPN's active participation in data collection and analysis, empowering them to continue the work independently. The approach also provided TFFPN with valuable insights into the industry and facilitated direct engagement with key stakeholders. It allowed the TFFPN team to take ownership and actively contribute to the project's success.
Workforce Diversity Workshop and Key Findings
Following the collection and analysis of the data, a "Workforce of the Future" workshop was held for key stakeholders to present the findings and discuss the insights. The workshop participants also identified actionable next steps for the industry.
As a result of the work, TFFPN established a Project Reference Group to provide technical and industry knowledge throughout the project's development and implementation. This was followed by the development of a three year Diversity Action Plan for the industry. You can download the Plan here..
